Dear Members and Friends of DECC!

Winter is here and it is white and snowy outside - the time of the year to enjoy the upcoming Christmas with the family and good friends.

Business environment is still going strong and Estonia has a nice growth in 2021. Of course, the hospitality sector is still down due to the worldwide Covid19 situation. The last corona wave in Estonia has been hard, but luckily short, and now it seems like it is on the right path again, just in time for Christmas - but we still need to be very careful.

The labour market is very tight and it is hard to get any kind of staff at the moment. However, there might be some help on the way from the government. In November, we had an interesting event hosted by FECC, where the Minister of Entrepreneurship and Information Technology Andress Sutt stated, that the government will present a package that will ease the requirements for allowing 3rd country staff to be hired. We haven't seen the details yet, but we will keep an eye on the development!

Last week, the board of DECC was invited to a get-together with all board members of FICE member chambers, where we had a very useful chance to share our plans, focus areas and issues. It was clear that the Green Transition was strongly on the agenda not only for the chambers but also for our embassies. Therefore I found it a bit sad that Eesti Energia is investing 320M EUR into a shale oil processing plant in Ida-Virumaa that will keep the mining going for at least 5 years (or more) after the plant is finished. This is not the right direction for Estonia, as that kind of money could have been used in a better matter, according to my personal opinion!

As you all know by now, we have postponed the annual Christmas Party to the beginning of 2022, once the Covid19 situation allows it. However, we have together with NECC, SECC and FECC arranging an open-air Nordic Christmas event on 9 December. We are very happy that our good members and friends from Calle Eesti and Uue-Saaluse Winery are strongly supporting the event! Due to the limited places, this is a members-only event. 80+ people have already signed up from all four chambers, so hurry up and register already now.

The plans are being made for an interesting season 2022, so keep yourself updated with our newsletter. Stay safe and negative, I hope to see many of you on 9 December!

With warm winter regards

Peter Thomsen
